Biologics for chronic & autoimmune diseases
Everyday, our immune system protects us from infections and cancer cells. However, if misdirected, the activation of immune cells can result in damage to organs which can lead to autoimmune diseases, hypersensitivities and chronic inflammation.
Immunotherapy is most commonly used to treat autoimmune disorders such as e. g. Crohn's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. With the rise of biotechnologically produced drug products such as monoclonal antibodies, interferons and interleukins treatment options for patients improved.
Biologics are genetically engineered drugs that target highly specific components involved in the inflammatory process, e.g. cytokines, receptors or immune cells. They intervene in the mechanisms of disease development by specifically intercepting and switching off certain substances of the immune system or occupying their binding sites and thus blocking them.
